What does VideoObject schema actually do?
VideoObject structured data gives Google information about a video, including its title, thumbnail and publication date. Google says it can influence the information shown in video results and help Google find the video on a watch page. That is a description of supported metadata, not a promised ranking improvement. Google documentation
Our practical view is to begin with the visible asset and its purpose. Can a visitor watch the stated video on the page? Does the description identify the same video? Are the thumbnail and date accurate?

A tidy JSON block is useful. It is not a screening room, a video file or a receipt for traffic.
Which pages count as watch pages?
A watch page primarily exists for a visitor to watch one video. Google's examples include a video landing page, an episode player page and an event clip page. It distinguishes these from a blog post reviewing an embedded video, a product page with a supplementary video and a category page listing equally prominent videos. Watch-page guidance
This distinction matters for a business with useful demonstrations buried in product descriptions. Our recommendation is to decide whether the video deserves its own destination based on visitor need, not because a template can emit markup.
Google allows the same video to appear on a watch page and elsewhere alongside other information. A non-watch page can still be eligible for a text result and an image result with a video badge. Do not turn the watch-page distinction into a claim that an embedded product video has no value. Source

What information must the markup contain?
Google's current required properties are name, thumbnailUrl and uploadDate. The name is the video's title, the thumbnail property points to its unique image file, and the upload date records when the video was first published in ISO 8601 format. Google recommends including timezone information. Property definitions
Recommended properties include a description, duration and access URLs. Our recommendation is to collect the facts from the video owner before generating the markup. Do not replace a missing upload date with the date somebody installed a plugin, or fill an unknown duration with an estimate.
Use our product-schema guide for the related principle: machine-readable facts should agree with the content they describe.
Why are the page, player and file URLs different?
The watch-page URL takes a visitor to the page, the player URL identifies the playback interface, and the file URL identifies the video content itself. Google's guidance separates these three addresses. URL definitions
In VideoObject, Google recommends contentUrl where possible because it is the most effective way for Google to fetch the video file. If that is unavailable, it recommends embedUrl as an alternative. Do not put the ordinary article URL into either field just because it is the easiest address to copy. Structured-data definitions

Our review method is to keep three labelled fields in the evidence sheet and test each target. This is especially useful when the website owner, video host and content team are different organisations.
What can block discovery even when the JSON is valid?
Discovery and indexing require more than valid markup. Google advises standard video embedding elements, checking JavaScript-injected video in rendered HTML and not relying on user actions to load the video. Its video indexing requirements also include a stable, valid thumbnail. Technical guidance
Google further says the watch page must be indexed and performing well in Search before the video can be considered for indexing. It explicitly warns that page indexing does not establish video indexing. Source
Our image-sitemap guide offers related image-discovery context, but an image sitemap is not evidence that a video's thumbnail or video has been indexed.

How should a business measure the result?
Measure implementation, video indexing and performance as separate outcomes. Google points to the video indexing report for indexed videos and exclusion reasons, the video rich result report for VideoObject issues, and the Performance report's Videos search-appearance filter for search performance. Search Console guidance
Our recommendation is to record a starting sample, correction date and the actual evidence returned by those reports. Then connect relevant visits to enquiries or other business outcomes where your analytics permits. Report an AI citation only when you have observed it, with its query and context, not as an assumed consequence of adding schema.
Limitations
This is a documentation-based review framework, not a live audit of your video pages. It does not forecast indexing, rich-result display, rankings, leads or answer-engine citations. No deployable schema is supplied because no specific watch page, upload date or media file has been verified. Images are generated concepts, not Google interfaces or performance evidence.
What should your review brief include?
Bring the watch-page URL, player URL, file URL if available, thumbnail, publication record and current markup. Ask for a page-specific mismatch list before agreeing to template-wide changes.
