FAQ Schema: The Rich Result Is Gone
Key takeaways
- Google's documentation says FAQ rich results stopped appearing from 7 May 2026. Official update
- Schema.org still defines FAQPage; a vocabulary type and a search display feature are different things. Vocabulary source
- Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode do not require special schema.org structured data. AI guidance
- Audit useful visible answers and markup accuracy separately from promises about rankings or citations.
What changed for FAQ schema?
Google ended the FAQ rich-result display feature, not the existence of the FAQPage vocabulary.
Its May 2026 documentation update says the feature would no longer appear in Google Search from 7 May 2026. Its June update records removal of the FAQ rich-result documentation because the feature was no longer shown. Google's chronology

That makes older advice about qualifying for expandable FAQ listings obsolete. In this run, the former FAQ documentation address led to Google's documentation update page rather than an implementation guide. The dependable evidence is the current primary record, not an old tutorial that still ranks.
Schema.org continues to describe FAQPage as a web page presenting frequently asked questions. That definition does not promise a Google treatment. FAQPage definition
Should you remove FAQ sections from your pages?
Do not remove a useful question-and-answer section merely because its former search display has ended.
Our editorial recommendation is to judge each section by the reader's decision. Does the answer resolve a real question about scope, compatibility, pricing conditions, delivery or support? Does it preserve the qualifications needed to avoid a misleading takeaway? Can someone understand the first answer sentence without scrolling through a sales pitch?
Keep genuine answers; rewrite repetitive or promotional filler. A paragraph does not become useful because someone placed a question mark above it.

For a service business, an answer explaining what is excluded from a project can qualify an enquiry better than another version of “we provide tailored solutions”. This is our content judgement, not measured conversion evidence from a client account.
Should existing FAQPage markup stay?
Decide whether existing markup accurately describes the visible page and serves an identified purpose, rather than keeping or deleting it automatically.
Google's general structured-data guidelines require relevance and warn against misleading or non-visible content. They also state that correct markup does not guarantee a search-result appearance. General guidelines
Our suggested audit compares the marked-up questions and answers with the rendered page. Record missing questions, stale answers, stripped qualifications and template-generated material that users cannot see. Treat a syntactically valid object and an accurate content description as separate checks.
If no maintained consumer or purpose can be identified, discuss whether the implementation is worth maintaining. If a legitimate purpose exists, document it without calling it a Google rich-result benefit. This guide does not propose a live deletion or deployment.

Our breadcrumb schema guide offers the same discipline for a different type: start with the real page and navigation, not an attractive markup template.
Does FAQ schema improve AI visibility?
There is no basis here to promise that FAQPage markup will produce an AI citation.
Google says no special schema.org structured data is needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Its guidance instead includes ordinary search requirements and matching structured data to visible text. That statement concerns Google's named features; it does not establish every other answer engine's treatment of FAQPage. Google AI features guidance
Our recommendation is to make answers specific, supported and easy to attribute. Name the entity or service, answer directly and retain important conditions in the answer itself. These are editorial practices, not a guarantee that a model will select the passage.

For preview questions, see our search snippets guide. A clear description and a clean answer are useful assets; neither is a remote control for a search engine.
What should an FAQ audit deliver?
An FAQ audit should deliver a page-level evidence record, an editorial decision and reviewable technical recommendations.
Our suggested record includes the exact URL, visible question, visible answer, extracted markup, discrepancy, recommended action and responsible owner. Separate syntax errors from content mismatches and retired-feature expectations. Keep a before-state and verification method for any proposed change.
Shared-template or bulk changes need the applicable owner's approval, with a rollback plan. Validation output should be reported as validation output, not as a ranking or citation forecast.
Explore the SAGEO framework and bring a representative page for a focused conversation about its visible answers, current markup and business purpose.

Limitations
No client's live FAQ markup, Search Console data, rankings or conversion results have been measured here. The documented display change concerns Google Search; other systems may use structured data differently. This article supplies no deployable schema and authorises no live changes.
