Search Snippets: Your Description Is Optional
Key takeaways
- Google may show different snippets for different searches because the preview responds to the query. Google
- A meta description should describe its specific page, rather than repeat a site-wide slogan or a keyword list. Google

Why does Google ignore a meta description?
Google may select page text instead when that text better describes the page for the search. Its documentation says snippets are created automatically, primarily from page content, and may differ across searches. Source

That is not automatically a broken implementation. Check whether the description accurately summarises the page and whether the selected passage answers the query. The search engine has not signed a contract to reproduce your carefully polished sentence. Disappointing for the sentence, perhaps, but useful for the searcher.
Our judgement is to fix misleading or missing information before chasing cosmetic consistency. If your current offer needs a qualification, put that qualification next to the offer in the visible copy. A meta description should not become a hidden repair for a page that says something else.
How long should a meta description be?
Google does not set a maximum meta-description length, but it truncates search snippets as needed, typically to fit the device width. A character-count target can be an editorial convention, not a guarantee that every word will display. Source
Write one specific, human-readable summary of the page. Google recommends unique descriptions and discourages strings of keywords that fail to explain the content. Source

For a commercial page, our recommendation is to include the actual service or product and the useful distinction a buyer can verify. Leave out unsupported superlatives, stale prices and an offer the visible page does not confirm.
Which controls restrict search snippets?
Google documents nosnippet to prevent a page's snippet, max-snippet to specify a maximum snippet length and data-nosnippet to exclude selected page sections from snippets. Source
These are different decisions, not interchangeable tidying tools. Identify what you want to restrict and why before proposing one. A page-wide restriction deserves a different discussion from excluding a small boilerplate passage.
Our audit recommendation is to record the exact affected URLs, the current directive, the proposed scope and the expected trade-off. Do not put a page-wide preview restriction into a shared template merely to hide one awkward sentence. Fix the sentence if it is wrong.

What do snippet controls mean for Google AI visibility?
Google says supporting links in AI Overviews and AI Mode require a page to be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. It also lists snippet and indexing controls as ways to limit information shown in Search's AI features. Source
That makes preview settings relevant to discoverability, but it does not make them a citation dial. Google says no additional technical requirements or special schema are needed for those features and does not guarantee indexing or serving. Source
This article concerns Google's documented systems, not a promise about every answer engine. For separate content-access checks, see our image sitemap guide and VideoObject guide. More markup is not a substitute for deciding what the page should say.
How should a team audit search snippets?
Audit the page, its description and its preview controls together, then preserve evidence for any proposed change. Our suggested worksheet records the exact URL, target query, observed snippet, observation date, visible supporting passage and current controls.

Compare a small sample of important commercial and informational pages, rather than declaring a template broken from one result. Treat observed snippets as observations, not permanent promises. For preview-control troubleshooting, Google recommends checking the HTML received by Googlebot through URL Inspection and allowing time for recrawling and processing. Source
Before any live change, document the before-state, intended edit, verification method and rollback. Shared templates, indexing and robots directives need the applicable owner's approval. This guide authorises no live changes.
