Nosnippet: The AI Visibility Trade-Off
Key takeaways
- Nosnippet is different from noindex: one restricts previews, while the other excludes the page from search results. Google
- Google requires a page to be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Google
- Max-snippet:0 is equivalent to nosnippet, not a request for a very short description. Google
- Data-nosnippet can exclude selected passages from snippets instead of restricting the whole page. Google
What does nosnippet actually control?
Nosnippet tells Google not to show a text snippet or video preview for the page, and Google says it also prevents the content being used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode. A static image thumbnail may still appear. Google's robots documentation sets out those boundaries explicitly.

That is not the same as removing the URL from Search. Noindex is the separate exclusion rule. If you are deciding whether a page should be searchable at all, start with the noindex guide rather than using preview controls to solve a different problem.
Our judgement: on a commercial service page intended to win relevant enquiries, a blanket preview restriction deserves the same attention as other material search-visibility decisions. A setting is not low-risk merely because it contains fewer characters than the meeting invitation.
Why does this matter for AI search visibility?
It matters because Google's supporting-link eligibility for AI Overviews and AI Mode requires an indexed page that can appear in Search with a snippet. Google also says eligibility does not guarantee crawling, indexing or serving. Google's AI features guidance
This creates a practical trade-off. If the business wants those opportunities, an accidental nosnippet rule works against that objective. If the publisher deliberately wants to restrict previews or direct input, the restriction may be intentional. The audit must establish the owner's aim before recommending a change.

Do not turn the reverse into a sales promise. Removing a restriction does not guarantee that an AI response will cite the page. Google says no special schema.org markup or new AI text file is required for these features; existing search fundamentals still apply. Google
How are max-snippet and data-nosnippet different?
Max-snippet limits the permitted text length, while data-nosnippet identifies particular text that should not be used in snippets. Google documents max-snippet:0 as equivalent to nosnippet and max-snippet:-1 as allowing Google to choose the length. Google
A positive character limit is not a precision switch for featured snippets. Google gives no universal minimum snippet length, and a low limit does not guarantee exclusion from featured snippets. Google's featured-snippet guidance
Data-nosnippet applies to span, div and section elements. It is a boolean attribute, so writing data-nosnippet="false" does not turn it off. Google also advises against adding or removing the attribute on existing nodes through JavaScript because extraction may occur before or after rendering. Google

Our preferred starting point is the smallest restriction that matches a clearly documented business requirement. Review the intended protected passage and its surrounding container carefully, rather than wrapping an entire service explanation for convenience.
What should a read-only audit inspect?
A read-only audit should inspect the response headers, robots meta tags and relevant rendered HTML for representative URLs. Google supports robots controls through both meta tags and the X-Robots-Tag header, and says the more restrictive rule applies when rules conflict. Google
Group the findings by template: service, location, product, article and any deliberately restricted content. Record the exact URL, the observed rule, where it came from and the owner's intended outcome. Do not infer a site-wide problem from one response, or a clean site from one unrestricted homepage.
For each proposed correction, prepare the before-state, intended change, affected templates, verification method and rollback. Leave live changes to the authorised release process. A visibility audit is not permission to alter a production header.

How should you verify an authorised correction?
Verify an authorised correction by checking the deployed response and what Google received, then allowing for recrawl and processing. Google's troubleshooting guidance recommends URL Inspection to examine the HTML Googlebot received and notes that processing a changed preview control takes time. Google
Separate deployment evidence from search outcomes. A corrected header is an observed technical result; later changes in impressions, clicks or enquiries need their own measurement. Neither proves a guaranteed AI citation.
For the related question of how Google chooses descriptive text, read Search snippets: your description is optional. Then use SAGEO's search, answer and generative visibility framework to brief a focused review of commercially important templates, with proposed changes kept separate from implementation.
Limitations
This article describes Google's documented controls, not a live audit of your site or a universal policy for every answer engine. Nosnippet is not access control, a confidentiality measure or a guarantee about every use of public content. No traffic uplift, ranking improvement or citation outcome is promised, and no live configuration was changed for this article.
